“liberation Theology”

Excerpt from a random novel that stuck me:

[Steve “You recall, I’m sure, when Pope Pail VI denounced so-called ‘liberation theology.’He ordered socially active priests in South and Central America to stop speaking out against the atrocities of their governments. Those priests were demanding change, yet the Holy Father spoke of it as ‘fomenting rebellion.’”

[Veltroni “Of course I remember. He was concerned lest the Church be evicted from those countries, an the people thus denied the grace and sacraments of their faith. The Church cannot minister long distance, Steve. We must be on the ground, in a place, to offer the Eucharist.”

“I understand that.” Steve said. “But I ask you this. Did Jesus worry about offending the local authorities?”

Veltroni drew a breath.

Steve smiled faintly. “It makes you think, doesn’t it? Jesus spoke out for the oppressed in every instance. He was willing to die to save all those people who weren’t’ allowed to se t foot in the Temple because they were deemed unclean.

. . .So I ask you again, am I pledged to protect the Word or the Church?”

Ever Look At Your College’s Website?

You head down memory lane, surfing around to see which pictures are still up, which professors are still around, which fellow students still haven’t graudated (etc), when suddenly you get sidetracked by your name.

Recalling his experiences in a World Literature course at ENC, Henry prepares to lead his high school students on “Dante’s whirlwind tour through hell.” Henry reports a questionable work ethic in the age group, but relents, “I love them anyway.”

When the hell did I have this conversation? And with who? Of course it SOUNDS like something I would say, and I’m sure I have said it, but how did t wind up on the English Dept page?

$600 In Retirement Money: To Keep Or Not To Keep.

I just got a check from the New Hampshire Retirement System for a little over $600.

I’m 27. I’m not retired. There’s no way this is my cash. Moral problem.

So I called one of my two employers from NH, the camp I grew up at. Ron said that it wasn’t from them, and I should prob NOT cash the check. The government gets upset at those things. I’m more thinking about some poor old guy who has the same name as me who is not going to be able to buy food this month because he didn’t get his check.

I called the NHRS people a moment ago to ask them about it. They were very nice about the whole thing. They ran my SSN twice. Asked me a couple of questions. Then told me to keep the money.

Apparently it IS mine. From the other job I worked. She was actually kind of pissed that I hadn’t claimed the money sooner. Guess it was messing up their books and they needed to get rid of it.

NICE!
