Evolution Of A Poem

I’m really going to do this.

I just typed this out. This is the original. From here on out, all comment posts will be newer versions. This time it will be the whole poem. Not just a stanza.

Let’s see what happens.

[Untitled

marching two by two as a precursor to
wetter times until there is not found
one flesh of bone sacrificed for another
red dust into not dust sameness from covering
the heart not head not heel to heal wounded
chest after not seeing now clear sameness
suitable fit equal helper to clean and care
for all that remains a name from red dust

watching the parade, marching two by two
(perhaps a primal practice for wetter times
with less wood), he names until bored digression
(from orangutan and platypus to bat, rat, cat…)
convinces there is no familiar flesh of

bone sacrificed for another (red dust into
not dust) sameness, from a covering of
the heart, not head, not heel, to heal
a wounded chest after not seeing

    now clear sameness suitable fit
equal helper to clean and care
    for all that remains
    a name from red dust

watch the parade, the marching two
by two (primal practice for wetter
    times, with less wood). designation
    bored into digression (orangutan,
arachnid, platypus . . . cat, rat, bat,
    wombat): unfamiliar stirrings. absence
after seeing others’ familiar flesh of
    flesh. slumber into sacrifice. cut
to the bone for a stranger. dust into
not dust. sameness, from a covering,
from enclosure of vitality. of heart,
(not head, not heel). suitable. fit.
equal helper to clean and care for all
that remains: a name from dust
    imagined. imaged.

    reflection

the first parade, marches past two by two
as primal practice for wetter times
with less wood, and his designations
    are bored into digression (orangutan,
arachnid, platypus . . . cat, rat, bat,
wombat), until an unfamiliar stirring settles:
an absence after seeing others’ familiar flesh
    of flesh.

so he slumbers into sacrifice: cleaved to the bone
for a stranger. dust hewn into not dust. a blessed
lack of sameness from a covering cut from
an enclosure of vitality and questioning: what can
holds the heart (not head or heel)? what is suitable?
    which container can hold?

he awakes contracted and complete, an equal awaits
though all that remains is a name fit.

    [completely scaled back]

the first parade. marching two by two.
practice for wetter times with less
    wood. designations are bored into
    digression (orangutan, arachnid, platypus,
cat, rat, bat, wombat), until a sudden
    stirring, after seeing others’ flesh
of familiar flesh. amazed at what
    an absence could signify.
