Colorado Springs
Had an almost vacation. In “the Springs” for a conference.
There are few things better than being surrounded by people with a common focus, purpose, set of ideals, and f-ed up senses of humour. I supposed that this is what the Church (universal and local) is supposed to be like; a foretaste of heaven. But that’s another matter.
Highlights:
* Smiles, laughter and bloody good food.
* Realization that I should spend more time in bars/pubs, not because I’ll start drinking, but because complete strangers have great stories and lives.
- The old guy who wanted to know everything about me: my goals for life, whether I was going to school, that everyone should have a purpose, and that purpose should be to make other people’s lives better.
- The bartender who gave up going to Costa Rica, took her entire life savings, and spent 10 months helping hurricane Katrina victims because she felt that she should.
- The former special ed teacher, who was damn hostile, but after a bit of talking, confessed her love of her life and a firm belief that God will always make a way out of the situations which He leads her into. Esp, with the aid of her twin sister, who was with her, and sharing the same sentiments.
- Convincing a bunch of drunk white guys that they had met a Black guy from Scotland.
* Having random strangers all around town write out on post-it notes words of wisdom they would pass on to others to make the world a better place, and then giving those post-its back to them, so they could spread their knowledge to others.
*Meeting other great teachers who I wish worked in this state
sigh.
(Snap back to reality)
