Now Who’s Being Passive Aggressive?

Story I heard resently:

A mom has taught her young, elementary school age son a simple life lesson. Her son will stumble into the kitchen with that pitiful and forlorn expression of unfulfilled need and say, “mom, I’m thirsty.” She will turn and in a lovingly chiding voice ask, “now who’s being passive aggressive?” The boy then sighs and asks, “mom, may I have something to drink?”

Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

To teach children the idea of being forthright and direct at such an early age. I’ve been trying desperately not to say this to people every day as they stumble into the kitchen of my life with barely veiled requests for time, attention, or more tangible things.

How hard it is to raise one’s hand and be direct; Isn’t this something learned in school? If you have a question or a request, why not just ask and receive?

Why try to slip in through the doggie door to gain access, or stand outside on the front stoop, attempting to look as sad and pathetic as you possibly can, so others will feel compelled to break you in? There is a door and it works perfectly well.

There is juice on the counter.

Pull up your big girl/boy pants and ask/act like an adult.
